Pastor’s Corner – August 2014

Summer has ended and school has resumed. Remember when school didn’t begin until after Labor Day? August was the last month of summer, not the first month of school. Oh, for days of laughter and fun. We played until dinner time and then went back at it until the sun went down. Exhausted we slept the peaceful sleep of fresh air and green grass.

However, the fun of summer time does not have to end merely because we have returned to the routines of the rest of the year. I want to share with you the wisdom I found in a clothing catalogue. The first is the theme for this column…”All true wisdom can be found on T-shirts!” Here are my favorites:

“Oops…Did I roll my eyes out loud?”
“Squirrel says, ‘Excuse me…Your bird feeder is empty.’”
“Don’t get me started, I don’t have brakes.”
“I can explain it to you, but I can’t understand it for you.”
“From now on we’re screwing things up my way.”
“I have OCD and ADD, so everything has to be perfect…but not for very long.”

I am sure that you have seen wise words displayed upon the front of T-shirts, as well as some not terribly wise words. Wisdom can be found all around us, if we are willing to look, even in places we would have never thought to look. Remember that the best lessons and deepest wisdom is often the kind that comes from laughing at ourselves.

One last piece of discovered wisdom speaks to the purpose of all of us. So often we think that our purpose is to succeed and increase our resources for ourselves and our families. Yet as Christians, we know that we should be about more than accumulation of earthly treasures. Former President Woodrow Wilson shared these words, “You are not here merely to make a living.” You are here in order to enable the world to live more amply, with greater vision, with firmer spirit of hope and achievement. You are here to enrich the world, and you impoverish yourself if you forget the errand.”

We do not live for ourselves, but for the God who created each of us. We live to be servants of one another so that others may see our good works and give thanks to our Father in Heaven. Sound like wisdom you might have heard before. Imprint it upon a T-shirt, or better yet, imprint it upon your life.

Shalom, Darrell
